WHO AM I?

Hey there! I am Shelby Schrader, Licensed Professional Counselor and Approved Clinical Supervisor. In over a decade of experience, I have learned one major thing: There is always hope, and it's an absolute honor to help others find theirs.


I always come to therapy with a strengths-based and recovery-oriented approach -- believing that my clients have the tools they need to succeed and we will develop them together. There are many different interventions we can use, so we will work together to find the one that works best for you! Every person is unique, so what works for one may not work for another. Our therapy sessions will be tailored specifically to you and what you need, and we won't stop until we find what works!


VALUES

My top three values: Integrity, Belief, and Achievement. Every thought, belief, and action needs to exhibit these values. These are tightly woven into my life, and implemented in therapy. I also have a firm belief that people do the best they can, with what they have, in the moment. This belief helps us to remove any biases or judgement -- simply come as you are, because you are welcome here. I believe you are doing the best you can, and therapy is going to help you do even better. I rescued my pup, Remmy, in December 2019 and it was the best decision. There's something so great about living beyond ourselves, whether in community action, animal rescues, or movements like Black Lives Matter. We have the power to change the world!

SPECIALTIES - DEPRESSION

If you feel like the weight of the world is crashing down on you, or you can't seem to find the excitement in activities you used to enjoy, you might be experiencing symptoms of depression. We will work together to identify any negative thoughts that might be increasing depressive symptoms, and work to reframe these. Depression can feel like a spiral, but therapy is the ladder that will help pull you out.

SPECIALTIES - ANXIETY

In today's world, anxieties and worries abound. Learn to take control of unnecessary worry, calm your anxieties, and start to live with more calm in your life. We'll take an in-depth look at what creates and / or triggers anxious thoughts, and implement coping skills to help alleviate the anxiety. We'll also work on incorporating mindfulness to help bring a calm, present-focused mindset.

SPECIALTIES - CODEPENDENCY

Relationships are hard -- especially when you feel your life completely revolves around someone else's. Ever felt like you're having a great day, but if your partner is having a horrible one, you automatically take on their demeanor? Do you feel you rely on your partner more than "normal?" Breaking codependency takes work -- we'll work to increase your self-esteem and self-worth, so you can confidently be who you want to be, independent of other's emotions.

TECHNIQUES - DBT

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) suggests that individuals do the best they can, with what they have, in every situation. I've found that this approach allows me to provide a purely nonjudgmental approach, open to understanding the client's perspective. Immense healing can come from being heard, validated, understood, and accepted. I've been trained in DBT and utilizing the skills in therapy for over eight years. (NOTE: DBT skills are taught, but complete DBT requires skills groups as well.)

TECHNIQUES - CBT

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) was the most-preferred therapeutic approach in my graduate program. CBT is evidenced-based, effective, and has the ability to be short-term. CBT believes that our thoughts and behaviors can be reframed and retrained, as to help us live more positive and fulfilling lives. I've been trained in and utilizing CBT in over ten years, and have seen incredible shifts in mood, demeanor, and overall outlook.

TECHNIQUES - MI

Motivational Interviewing (MI) can be the tool that helps eliminate ambivalence and unlock internal drive. Ever want to make a change but not sure where, or how, or how much you really want to? MI can help assist in processing through those thoughts. I was trained in MI over 12 years ago, but since then have become a trainer myself. Currently, I train staff at my main place of employment, and I am a certified trainer through Mercy Care in Arizona.

Let's be honest -- we do not always fit a certain criteria, nor do we require one specific approach. The beauty of therapy is that we get to discover, together, the best techniques for you -- therefore helping you overcome whatever distress you are experiencing. I will always work to help you feel comfortable and confident in your therapy experience.
